Marines refresh: before and after
@alice
These were painted in 2019. I refreshed them last weekend.
The original paint job was fine — flat basecoats, single wash, no highlights. It looked like every other marines force on a tabletop in 2019. Functional, not memorable.
The refresh took about an hour per model. The changes:
- A second wash in the recesses, much thinner
- Edge highlights on the shoulder pads only
- A weathering pigment on the boots and lower legs
That's it. No stripping, no rebasing, no agonising. The result reads as a completely different paint scheme from two feet away, which is the only distance that matters in a game.
Worth doing on any army you've owned for more than a year. You know the colours by now. You're better at painting than you were when you first did them. A refresh is the cheapest army upgrade you'll ever buy.
