A 30-minute review of Quacks
@finn
The Quacks of Quedlinburg. Reviewed in 30 minutes because that's about how long it takes to play.
Rating: 7/10. Would play again.
What it does well
The push-your-luck loop is one of the cleanest I've seen. You draw chips, you decide when to stop, you live with the consequences. Nobody else is doing anything that affects you, which is unusual for a game that still feels social.
What it does less well
The chip economy is almost perfect, and the "almost" is what holds it back from 8 or 9. A bad early round can lock you out of the upgrades that would have rescued you, and there's no recovery mechanic. You can lose by turn three and have to play it out.
Bottom line
A game I'd happily teach to a new gamer in five minutes and still enjoy playing on the tenth go. That's a pretty good combination.
